The commercial heart of the town
Piazza Duomo was the centre of Spilimbergo’s economic and administrative activities. This is where the merchants who arrived in town after fording the Tagliamento did business, where transactions were completed, goods inspections carried out, and gabelles paid. All this is testified by two important buildings: the 13th-century Customs House, the seat of magistrates (where duties and all other taxes were paid), and the 14th-century Palazzo la Loggia on the northern side, once the town hall.
The Customs House
The “domus nova” that housed the Gothic Customs House featured a ring hanging under the northern arch of the portico. It was used to apply the stadera (ancient scales) to check the weight of the supplies. An old inscription reminds us of the function of this building, so important for the finances of the Lords of Spilimbergo.
